The funeral took place recently of a leading volunteer fund raiser for the local John Taylor Hospice.

Ken Stokes aged 79 from Walmley, had helped to raise over £14,000 for the Hospice since the death of his wife Beryl in 2001. With others he went on to found the Grange Support Group. The Group, provided mutual support for those who had lost a loved one and featured a packed calendar of outings and events, but went on to also help the Hospice financially.

Ken died at the Good Hope Hospital after a lengthy illness - and a service of remembrance took place at Sutton Crematorium led in by the music of James Lasts Hero and concluding with Rock Around The Clock. A reception was held at Sutton Town Football Club a venue often used by the Grange Support Group for their events.

Barbara Chapman, a founder of the Support Group said,

Ken was a delight to be with. He was totally dedicated to helping others and he always made everyone feel welcome. His impish humour brightened everyones day. His loss has left a big gap, but we shall continue his work including raising money for the Hospice.

Ken had been a very successful sales manager, a lover of music and dancing and was a life long blue nose. A proud family man who loved life, he had two daughters Jayne and Linda, sons in law Alan and Kev and 7 grand children.

Daughter Linda told us,

After Mom had been diagnosed with cancer, she was able to stay at home thanks to Dad and the support that he in turn received from the Hospice.

He was enormous fun and a huge laugh his large personality would fill a room and get any party going.

Dad was a bright shining star and though no longer with us, it is difficult to be sad for too long because he left us with so many happy memories.

We are very grateful to Good Hope Hospital for their care for Dad.

Ray Woods Marketing and Fundraising Officer for the League of Friends of the Hospice added his own tribute, saying,

The Grange Support Group has been quietly working away raising funds for the Hospice for many years and it is always a joy to attend their meetings - which Ken chaired prior to his death. Together with Barbara, he helped everyone to feel welcome including me. Volunteers like Ken are the salt of the earth and we will always be grateful to the unsung heroes like him.

Ken's funeral raised nearly £500 for the John Taylor Hospice.
