Sutton Coldfield library must re-open

Suton Coldfield residents say they are very happy that the council has been forced to take action over Sutton Coldfields popular library.

The Sutton Coldfield library building was closed in May after asbestos was found and the council realised it had lost the records of who was responsible, landing it with a £1.8m repair bill.

The councils plans to mothball the library possibly indefinitely, leaving local residents without the vital social and learning amenity, were dashed, however, by the landlord (Greater Manchester Pension Fund, who demanded the council repair and re-open it by December 2011 or they will undertake the work themselves, charging the council for it with added interest.

It is not only residents who have suffered due to the library closure. Local businesses around the Red Rose Centre have seen a drop in trade since the library closure and are looking forward to it re-opening.
