1.3m redevelopment for historic Sutton Coldfield chapel - local news
A Sutton Coldfield church is due to relocate this month to allow a £1.3 million redevelopment of its town centre chapel.

The Sutton Coldfield Duke Street Chapel,an independent evangelical church, has been welcoming Sutton Coldfield worshippers for more than 100 years.

Its existing chapel will be demolished and a replaced with a larger main hall, larger community meeting rooms, offices and modern kitchens and toilets.

Only the existing church hall, dating from 1906, will be retained as worshippers thought it the most attractive building on the site.

The expansion will not only allow the chapel to accommodate its 200-strong and growing congregation but improve facilities for community groups and organisations.

The majority of the £1.3 million cost is being funded by the Sutton Coldfield Duke Street Fellowship, with construction expected to take ten months. Sunday services will now be held at the Clifton Road Youth Centre at 10.30am.

Church spokeswoman Anita Byron said: The church has grown piecemeal from the Victorian building, with parts added in the 1960s and 1970s.

The chapel is a very limited and narrow. This redevelopment will enlarge it by a third and allow seating for another 50 people.

The improved facilities to be provided by the rebuild, will enable the church to offer a wider range of community services. We will be able to run a range of activities which the existing building would not allow to.

We hope to be back in time for next Christmas, she added.

Existing activities at Sutton Coldfields Duke Street, including weekly youth groups, parent and toddlers, parenting support, friends and neighbours, an art group and a retired mens fellowship are continuing at other venues throughout the town.
