Sutton Coldfield pensioner awarded compensation for leather sofa burns - local news
A Sutton Coldfield pensioner has been awarded £1,800 in compensation after receiving toxic burns from his sofa.

76 year old William Jordan from Sutton Coldfield was one of 408 victims who purchased furniture containing the banned and highly sensitising fungicide DMF from the now-bankrupt furniture retailer, Land of Leather.

Sutton Coldfield based Mr Jordan, who bought two sofas in July 2008, suffered painful rash-like injuries to the back of his legs and still suffers health related issues.

"I noticed the problems within two or three weeks of buying the sofas," Mr Jordan recalls.

"My legs felt like my blood was boiling inside and they were itching all the time. I was quite worried because I have type II diabetes so I went to the doctor, but they didn't have a clue what it was.

"I tried everything to ease the discomfort, from wrapping my legs in wet bandages to ice sprays. I'm still suffering even today I've lost count of the number of things I've used, but nothing makes any difference, and sometimes the muscles in my legs seem to go hard. But I won't let it effect my daily life anymore."

This week the Royal Courts of Justice in London agreed Land of Leather's insurer, Zurich, should compensate the sofa victims.

Richard Langton, senior litigation partner at Russell Jones and Walker, and the solicitor who has led the group litigation, said: "Because of the irresponsible use of a chemical thousands of consumers have suffered serious and painful health problems.

"All have been upset that household goods could hurt them in their own home. For this group of victims, losing the right to compensation added insult to injury. Money was never the most important thing for my clients, they wanted recognition that a wrong had been done to them. I hope that they can now look to put this ordeal behind them."
