50 criminals in Sutton Coldfield, Erdington and Kingstanding arrested
Operation Crackdown has led to 50 criminals in Sutton, Erdington and Kingstanding, Birmingham being arrested and £16,000 of outstanding fines paid.
Criminals in Sutton Coldfield and also Erdington were targeted this month during a two-week operation aimed at Sutton Coldfield offenders who have failed to comply with court orders.

Birmingham North local policing unit officers arrested 50 people in Sutton Coldfield, Erdington and Kingstanding and recovered £16,000, contributing to £23,000 recovered in Birmingham, out of a total of £250,00 of unpaid fines in Operation Crackdown.

In the city 192 were arrested with a further 12 surrendering themselves to the courts.

The joint operation saw West Midlands Police work with Her Majesty's Court Service to track down criminals who had breached community orders to those who had not paid court fines.

The main groups targeted were those who had committed crimes, such as burglary, robbery and vehicle crime, which particularly affects local communities and is a priority for criminal justice agencies.

Special courts were opened during the operation which saw offenders brought to court on the day they were arrested, with magistrates re-sentencing them accordingly. Sergeant Helen Carver, of the Integrated Diversion and Offender Management team, said the targeted initiative had been 'tremendously successful'.

"The work of the past two weeks shows that we take a robust approach to offenders who do not comply with their community and court orders, bringing them to justice in an effective, efficient manner and ensuring that they comply with the sentences given to them. Ultimately we are sending out a message that we will do whatever we can to protect our communities."

The initiative builds on a similar exercise in February which nationally saw 9,428 warrants executed and £899,384 collected.
