Sutton Coldfield Town centre has a butchers at last! - local news
Sutton Coldfield centre finally has its own butchers.

SJA Meat, Poultry and Fish, a new butchers in Sutton Coldfields InShops markets, opened just eight weeks ago. It has been set up by Simon J. Arnold, aged 23, from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.

Simons father was a butcher, and he grew up around the trade. He trained as an electrician, but when business went quiet, he decided to work with his friend on a meat wagon, at a food market, in Essex. It was there he realised his ambition.

Simon said: I love everything about the trade and I like my food. You get to choose what you sell, whats good, and whats not. All of SJAs suppliers are local, from within a 50 mile radius of Sutton Coldfield. The fish is chosen fresh every morning from the Birmingham Fish Market.

I think people prefer to support their local shops and traditional trades. Supermarkets cant compete with that.

With a local butcher, you can get advice on what cuts to get, and how to cook it. Our meat is all handpicked, and cut in front of you. You can have as much, or as little as you like.

It has to be cheaper. At the end of the day thats the be all and end all, but there are plenty of people who dont mind paying the extra couple of quid for something special that they will really enjoy. We just provide good quality at a cheap price.

The young Sutton Coldfield butcher has invested all his own time and money into the business, often working 14 hour days, despite having a young baby at home. But he says its all worth it.

Customer Della Roberts, aged 56, of Sutton Coldfield, said: I think its absolutely amazing to have a butchers in Sutton Coldfield again, we were in desperately in need of one. You can see what youre buying, you know where it comes from, and you can chat to the butcher. You can ask him anything you dont get that from a supermarket!
