Sutton Coldfield mother of six suffering from terminal cancer marries life long partner - local news
A 'MAGICAL' wedding day was enjoyed by a Sutton Coldfield mum-of-six suffering from terminal cancer as she married her lifelong partner last weekend.

Sonia Kearney (née Donughu) of Sutton Coldfield married David at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lichfield Road, Sutton Coldfield. last Saturday with family and friends attending.

The happy couple said everything went well on the day and even by the middle of this week, Sonia said she was 'still on cloud nine'.

The couple who live in Jerome Road, Sutton Coldfield have been coping with news in February that Sonia has just six to 12 months to live having been diagnosed with terminal oesophageal cancer.

On Saturday, their daughters Matilda, Rebecca and Emily were bridesmaids with their sons George, as page boy, Vincent as usher and Richard in full uniform giving his mum away.

"It was absolutely fantastic," the 42-year-old said. "There wasn't a dry eye in the church and it was a very emotional day.

"The service was amazing and the reception was brilliant."

The couple chose 'N Sync's This I Promise You as their first dance and spent their first night as a married couple, 23-years into their relationship, at New Hall Hotel, Sutton Coldfield.

Sonia's son Richard, aged 20, had been willing to go absent without leave from the army after they initially refused to extend his leave to attend his mum's wedding.

The Mercian Regiment soldier was granted extended leave just a day before the wedding allowing his family to enjoy the day without fear of him being arrested. The army have also now said they are looking to find a position for Richard close to his parents' Birmingham home instead of his current job in Germany.

Groom David, aged 49, said his wedding day was 'out of this world'. "It feels like a fresh start," he said. "I want to thank Father Gerry Breen for all he has done for us and everyone who came. They were all lovely."
