IT and Media – Email Marketing

I went to an expo devoted to all things related to online marketing a few weeks ago. I was quite taken aback by the huge amount of excitement generated by social media which is the hot marketing tool of the moment. Social media marketing is at the same place now that search engine optimisation was seven or eight years ago. What really surprised me was that the both the number and proportion of communications made by email have increased; 45% of online communications were made by email last year. This means that email marketing, which many people thought was dying a death, is very much alive and well. Done properly, email marketing is a remarkably cheap and effective tool, whether you are trying to promote a local club or a sizeable business.

Within the EC, email marketing is governed by data protection and privacy laws – effectively, you are not supposed to send unsolicited direct marketing emails to individual email addresses. The law is extremely vague and, to the best of my knowledge, there has never been a prosecution brought for breaching it but, even so, a minimum requirement is that recipients must be able to unsubscribe from any future emails if they so choose. Providing this option means that you will need to use some form of email marketing software. There are quite a few systems on the market; most of them don’t charge for the software but charge a fee according to the volume of emails sent, typically £10-20 per thousand.

There are lots of other advantages to using email marketing software. One of the main ones is that you can manage your lists of email addresses. You could have several different lists, one for existing customers, one for potential customers, one for customers who buy a particular product or service and so on. You can add or remove addresses from your lists and, if someone unsubscribes, their address will automatically be removed from the list. Most systems will also prevent you from adding that address to a list in the future. When you send an email out the system generates a report that tells you who opened it, who unsubscribed and who clicked through to the website. You can use this information to target further communications more precisely. The software also contains design templates which allow you to create eye catching emails with images and branding included. The design templates are easy to use but for more professional results you may need to use the services of a graphic designer.

One thing that has revived the fortunes of email marketing is the huge improvement in anti-spam software, but this can also create problems for those engaged in email marketing. Anti-spam software is interactive and, if several people report your domain for broadcasting spam, your entire domain can be blacklisted and then you won’t be able to send emails to anyone who uses that spam filter. The best way to avoid this is to be selective about the email addresses you include on your list. Obviously, existing or previous customers and people who have enquired about your business are fair game. If you are sourcing addresses by other means then make sure that they are likely to be interested in whatever products or services you are trying to promote. Also, try and avoid generic addresses such as sales@ or info@ because these can be shared by several users and are much more likely to report your email as spam.

You don’t have to use email marketing software just to try and sell things. If you run a group, club or association in Sutton Coldfield it is an easy to use and cost effective way of keeping in touch with your members.

Pimp My Ride -To the Sutton Coldfield Garden Centre and Back!

Pimp My Ride -To the Garden Centre and Back!

We’ve all done it – popped along to our local Sutton Coldfield garden centre for a packet of sunflower seeds and come out with enough new plants to re-stock a small country estate. It is also virtually impossible to leave without a trailer full of compost, a nice new shiny stainless steel thingamibob for weeding the borders or maybe a Lady Spade! Which is all very well until you get to the family Mondeo and wonder how you are going to fit it all in.

The bottom line is that most cars and I include Chelsea Tractors and pick ups in this sweeping statement, were not designed for the garden centre run. The loading procedure for your average shopping trip inevitably takes the form of a scene from ‘It’s a Knockout’ with Stuart Hall providing a hilarious commentary as the boot, back seat, foot wells and glove box are engulfed in horticultural stuff.

Yes, of course you can cheat and take advantage of the free home delivery, but not everyone can wait to get their new plants and ‘sundries’ home; besides, what if you live outside the delivery area? A few years ago I remember travelling through Birmingham in my gleaming company car when I spotted a garden centre with a sign proclaiming ‘SALE – EVERYTHING HALF PRICE!’ This always has that red rag/ bull effect on yours truly so business meetings were cancelled as I went hunting for a bargain. Unfortunately, my bargain(s) turned out to be a pair of spiral topiary specimen trees which were approximately 6 feet tall and planted in substantial pots of very heavy compost. Stuart Hall would have had a field day; my suit, the previously immaculate car and my self-esteem were in tatters as I managed to cajole these monsters through the boot, across the back seat and onto the dashboard. Thankfully the trees survived unscathed and are still resplendent in the front garden of my old house – however, every time I pass by I get flashbacks of the journey from hell and the hefty cleaning bill!

Luckily I have never been one of those people who feel a need to drive around in a spotless car and, having now acquired 3 children and assorted dogs, that isn’t an option anyway. Yes I’ve done the flash motor bit but my latest jalopy, an old Volvo estate, is proving to be as close to perfection as I can get for garden centre forays. Firstly, it has got a massive boot with a low sill; with the back seats down you could even get a garden bench in there! Secondly it already has a background aroma of ‘Eau de Wild Bunch’ so a stray bit of manure won’t make any difference. Most importantly, I have a good feel for exactly how much I can load in before either the suspension gives up the ghost or the boys in blue read me my rights. If I had one complaint it would be the lack of headroom for tall plants (sod the passengers!) but perhaps I could get someone to fit one of those concertina roofs like you see on Camper Vans.

The big problem with garden centre purchases is the ‘randomness’ of it all. Normally your groceries will fit neatly into plastic bags. Not so your garden supplies where you have to try and keep your plants from toppling over and prevent muddy water from dripping on your velour upholstery. I would love to see the Top Gear team have a go at ‘pimping’ your average car into the ideal wheels for garden centre devotees – Jeremy Clarkson take note!

Maybe ‘garden centre user friendliness’ would not be top of your average road tester’s priorities when putting the latest Porsche through it’s paces – but I would be willing to bet that at some stage in its life it’s going to have some inappropriate plant life on the passenger seat following a trip to the garden centre!

Fitness in Sutton Coldfield

HydroSpin!

So, you’ve heard of spinning and aqua aerobics classes but have you ever thought of putting the two together? Hydrospinning is a new style of exercise taking Sutton Coldfield by storm this combines these two effective workouts in a pool based class. The theory is simple; cycling to music with an instructor, it’s just that the bicycle is under water! Gyms are ordering their Hydrorider bikes by the drove, it is a set to be a real hit!

Hydrospin is a pulse-increasing, muscle strengthening exercise that uses water resistance to push your body to a new level of condition. It is a little odd wearing the special shoes with a swimming costume and the feeling of sitting on a bicycle in water takes some getting used to. The instructor gets you pedalling to the beat of the music and it gets progressively harder; the faster you pedal the stronger the resistance.

It is excellent for those who have old injuries, back pains or simply hate aching the day after. Water’s natural buoyancy means that this is a non weight bearing exercise and therefore minimises the risk of pulled or strained muscles. Hydrospinning could also be an excellent way to get people back into exercise, or indeed start them off, as there is little discomfort and stress to the joints.

It has other added benefits too. You can work your upper body at the same time and use the bike in more ways than on land; hanging off the back of the saddle whilst pedalling for example. Another property of water is hydrostatic pressure. This works to decrease your heart rate meaning you can work harder for longer. It is just science really, but you don’t need to understand it all because it’s really good fun. Just don’t drown if you have to get off to put your chain back on!
